Muggia: historical outline

The istro-venetian town of Muggia, for a long period subject to the Venetian Republic rule, feels the Venice influence, especially in the architecture style of the center, pleasantely enclose to the unfailing harbor access.

Muggia, or better the ancient Castrum Muglae, already existed during the Roman age, and from this period can be seen same ruins, walls and objects recovered during recent excavations.

Just on the hilltop overlooking Muggia, is present a Romanesque Santuary consacrate to Santa Maria Assunta, as well as what remains of the ancient fortification dated back to the 1375, near by which was recovered most of the archeological finds.
